Endovenous Reflux Disease (EVRD) is a very effective and relatively simple procedure to treat varicose veins. Initial consultation will consist of a Duplex ultrasound examination of the venous system in the legs. If the patient is a candidate for the procedure, a disposable catheter, powered by radiofrequency (RF) energy, is threaded into the greater saphenous vein. The warming causes the vein to collapse and shrink upon withdrawal sealing the vein closed. The procedure is relatively painless and has a low rate of side effects. This procedure is very effective in treating large, bulky veins in both men and women and saves them from undergoing costly invasive surgery.
Sclerotherapy is another treatment approach for smaller veins. Solution is injected into the affected vein using ultrasound as a guide. The physician uses the ultrasound wand to push the solution through the veins causing them to collapse. With both procedures, the patient wears a full leg stocking for two weeks to speed the healing process.
